Do i have to lift my motor a bit in my 1988 toyota 4runner to get the starter out?

i already tried to change my starter and i couldt get it out. too much stuff in the way. is there an easier way for em to do this?|||No, I had an 88 toyota 4x4 truck and replaced the starter fairly easily but I reached it thru the wheel well, it had to come foward and up thru the top it was a liitle aggravating but not bad nothing was removed or lifted. the truck should be the same as the 4runner.|||Are you absolutely sure the starter is the problem?? NEVER replace any part till you know the problem. If your truck don%26#039;t start I would bet it%26#039;s not the starter. What is the problem ? maybe you can save a lot of effort and $$$

Starter motor stopped working, what do I do?

I have a 2001 Jetta (GLS 2.0 L). During the last couple of months, the starter motor would make a funny scream when I started it. I ignored it until it stopped working today. I thought it might be due to low battery, but jumper started didn%26#039;t recover it.

Now, how do I change the starter? how even I tow the car to a mechanic? I know a remanufactured starter would cost like 100 bucks, but how expensive is it to tow my car? (I live in Charlotte, NC). Any alternative way?

any input is highly appreciated|||Try doing a little work yourself.

Get the front end up on some ramps. Disconnect your battery and then follow your Positive cable down and it bolts onto the starter. You will find other wires connected to the battery. Should only be 2 bolts holding the starter on. Disconnect and take it out. While looking inside the starter, have someone connect the battery and turn the starter. You should see a larger gear jump forward and spin rapidly. If it doesn%26#039;t, remove positive battery cable and clean the terminals and cable until they shine. Reconnect and try it again. If it continues to not spin or move forward, get a new starter. Put it in yourself. A few wrenches is all you needs, AND a battery terminal cleaner.|||see if some onelocal knowes how to change a str mtr for a few bucks it will cost ules than the tow job|||First you have to determine what the trouble is. If it has been happening for a while there are several things that could be happening. You could have a faulty starter, the ring gear may be stripped, the starter may have the bolts that attach it to the motor loose. You can get it towed no problem. You will have to check these things out before you buy another starter. Hope this helps you out.

If absolutely nothing at all happens when you turn the key then it could very well be the starter motor, but have the wiring checked out before condemning anything else, particularly the battery and the earth strap.

What is the little red wire connected to the starter motor called?

car wont start at times.. dealership said it was the positive battery cable, so i changed that. now they say its a small red wire that is connected to the starter... any help?!!! 2000 Hyundai sonata V6|||The ignition hot lead would be a good guess...but more likely it has a fuseable link on it...you can usually tell by about two inches of thicker insulation farther back from the connection...|||This is called %26quot;the little red wire%26quot;.........I couldn%26#039;t resist......seriously, this is the starter solenoid engage wire.

It%26#039;s a problem wire on many different models (so much so that a starter for a Ford Taurus, for instance, comes with this wire already attached and a crimp connector and a shrink tube insulator along with a warning tag to not remove it and instructions to cut the original wire and splice it.)|||your little red wire is power to the starter solinoid. your battery cable is the power for the starter motor.

Pontiac grandam motor shuts off when driving and when try to start back up starter clicks?

pontiac grandam motor shuts off when driving and when try to start back up starter clicks i changed the starter then it starts up again and drive the car again and the samething happens|||It sounds as if your alternator is going bad. But if the car restarts that probably isnt it. If your starter just clicks it usually means that theyre isnt enough voltage to turn the motor, the click is the solenoid engaging but the motor is not turning. Its also possible you have heat soak with the starter. Need more info. to have an accurate guess though. If the lights are getting dim while the car is running then i can almost guarantee you the alternator isnt charging properly.|||Obviously your skills were not up to the task. Take it to a shop.|||I agree, Sounds like alternator isn%26#039;t producing enough power and the battery is making up for the loss to keep the engine running and then when the battery is out of charge the engine dies and you get a rapid click at the starter because there isn%26#039;t enough power to turn the starter motor and it just sits there and clicks.

Starter motor keep on going after tuck is on.?

I starter my toyota tacoma, but the starter motor keep on going even after the truck was on. I try turning it off but it would not go off until I disconnected the Battery. I tap the Starter a few times disconnected it and connected it back. After I did the problem went away, but when I turned on the truck there was a weir grinding noise does. Does anybody know what I can do about it? Do I have to change my starter?|||Sounds like a bad starter to me. The grinding noise you heard was this during initial start? Cause a starter will grind if its turned while already on.|||Sound like the solenoid is sticking, you can pull it out and have it bench tested at an auto parts store.|||Sounds to me like the starter drive is sticking and not retracting properly once the engine starts. Does the ignition key spring back to the %26#039;on%26#039; position when you release it? If that is fine, it could be the starter solenoid going bad. And now that you have the grinding noise, the starter drive or flywheel teeth are probably damaged.

Would a faulty Starter motor smoke?

I removed and refitted my starter motor during a recent clutch change, during the removal it got shorted out then wired up wrong by a friend helping me. since then my battery drains, the engine struggles to start, the ignition lights on the dash dont go out when engine is running and I%26#039;m getting smoke coming from the underside, a lot of smoke, is the the starter or my clutch?|||You need to replace the starter motor before it catches fire|||Not your clutch. You%26#039;ve got a dead short somewhere. Disconnect your battery NOW, before you have a suddenly effective heater! Then check that the earth cables are all connected, if not it%26#039;s trying to feed back through the starter wiring which will not stand it. Hopefully this is all it is, if not it is indeed possible you%26#039;ve fried the solenoid, wiring or even the starter, though I gather it works okay.

And repeat after me, %26quot;I WILL disconnect my battery when fiddling with anything electrical, and keep track of where the wiring goes!%26quot;|||from the sound of it ..its that and a whole lot more|||you need a new starter motor before it sets on fire and u need a new car, the reason is because u have put the starter on wrong in the first place it as burnt out the solunoid in the motor which is putting a feed back to the battery, the easiest way to determine this is if you turn the car over does the power lead from the starter motor to the battery get hot.|||check that the earth wire between the engine and body and the earth wire from the battery to the body are secure|||an auto electriction or fitter is needed to resolve this problem before the vehicle self destructs. or buy a haynes manual to confirm wiring connections the smoke is proberly the insulation on the wiring burning. due to short. lack of charging also indicates incorrect wiring connections.|||duh yes...smoke coming out of it is a sign!|||Before starting the clutch job...the first thing you should have done is disconnect the battery......silly boy..... It could possible be that you haven%26#039;t connected the earth cable from the chassis to the bell housing..........Cant say for sure without looking......sorry.....

Hi have i got starter motor trouble with my 99 avensis?

Hi i have a 99 toyota avensis 1.6 petrol saloon.

Recently it has been given trouble starting. I have changed the battery for a new one with 13.4volt charge and checked alternator is keeping it charged. Everything seems too be ok battery wise. Usually it takes five too six attempts turning the ignition too get it too crank over and start. Could i have a problem with my starter motor?|||Almost definitely the starter motor or the earth strap|||try a new cylinoid first its way cheeper|||If it,s turning over quickly then the starters ok.If it%26#039;s turning over slowly then perhaps the starter is in trouble but clean and check all earth and live connections first. From your question though it sounds as if it may be a fuel or ignition related problem that your car has.|||If you%26#039;re hearing the solenoid engage when you turn the key you have a common problem. It sounds like you need new starter contacts. I%26#039;ve had to replace them on a 4runner and a Lexus ES. They%26#039;re made of copper and are inside the starter and will eventually wear out. When you turn the key the solenoid pulls down a copper ring which completes the circuit that send the power to the starter. When one of both of the contacts wears away that%26#039;s when you start have the problem you%26#039;re getting. On the car the starter usually sits atop the engine and only has two bolts holding in in place. Make sure you get a pair of contacts from the manufacturer as the don%26#039;t sell them in a set for some reason but since you%26#039;re already there it%26#039;s easy to replace them both. If you%26#039;re even a little mechanically inclinded it shouldn%26#039;t take you more than an hour to replace. If you%26#039;re having problems just Google %26quot;starter contact repair%26quot; and I%26#039;m sure you%26#039;ll find a ton of sites with a complete break down. Don%26#039;t spend a ton of money on a new starter as I have found this is a very common issue with older Toyota%26#039;s. You%26#039;ll need basic tools like a socket set, phillips head screwdriver and an adjustable wrench to do the job or can check with a repair shop as to how much they%26#039;ll charge you to do it. I paid $20 for the contacts and 45 minutes of time. Good luck

Changing a starter can be one of the easiest and one of the more dangerous task%26#039;s in car repair.

Dangerous if you decide not to unplug your battery COMPLETELY before you start work.... One Spark from the Positive to the frame and BOOM! (Remember, car%26#039;s run on GAS)

If you still want to attempt this. Locate the transmission. (Behind the motor) remember, front wheel drive cars have the motor turned sideways. Back of motor is on the drivers side.

Follow the positive battery lead. It should take you directly to the starter. 2 bolts and off she goes. (Remove the power connections to the starter as well. and PLEASE disconnect the battery! FULLY)|||Under the intake manifold.

How does a starter motor change polarity?

I always disconnect the negative (only) cable from my battery (boat/outboard motor) when I bring it in. I disconnected/reconnected the negative cables and, voila, it started spinning correctly. ?!?

How do i change the starter motor on a vw lupo?

firstly you need to disconnect the live power lead from the battery, usually a red wire. when this is done, remove the other cables, marking them so you can replace them correctly.then you will have to remove the bolts holding the motor in place. to get at the bottom two or three, you will have to remove the lower part of the heatshield on the exhaust, if there is one fitted to your car.this is held on by four ten millimetre nuts.once all the bolts are removed, you will have to lift and slightly rotate the starter motor, at the same time pulling it rearwards. it is a bit of a fiddle, and the exhaust downpipe can get in the way, but perseverance is the order of the day here.replacement is the opposite of removal.as always, whenever removing electrical leads, be careful not to arc across terminals with your spanners, the result will come as a shock!hope this helps.

How do i get to the starter motor on my astra diesel 1700cc van (w reg)

i need to change the starter motor on my van but i do not know where it is located.|||The starter motor is located at the back of the engine below the fuel inlet manifold. The best way to get at it is to jack the car up as high as you can, place axel supports under the car.

Remove the exhaust from the manifold, lay on your back under the car and you will be able to get to the starter.

Before you remove the starter do a few checks just to make sure that you are not removing it unnecessarily. First make sure that the connections on the battery are clean and tight, then follow the cables down to the starter. Again check to make sure that the connections between all the cables are tight and clean.

The get yourself a multi meter, connect it to the battery and try turning over the engine. Take a record of the voltage on the battery and if it drops below 8 volts you probably need a new battery.

As your van is a diesel it needs to have a really good condition battery.

Check your ground cables, engine to body and battery to engine,

this will happen when you have a bad ground,I am assuming that

you already checked the battery, also make sure the starter is

actually tight,it must be tight and grounded well.|||Your battery is dead. Try getting a jump or changing it. Your starter shoud be fine|||Have you made certain the battery is fully charged? and that the terminals are clean?|||That is a dead battery. Try replacing that and see what happens. If you don%26#039;t want to replace it you can take it and have it tested at any auto part store.|||Normally when the starter motor solenoid gives a loud clicking sound, it indicates low or poor voltage. First check that positive and negative terminals are tight and free of corrosion at both ends of the cables. Next check the stattic charge in the battery. Or in other words, check that the battery is fully charged. The next question that needs to be asked is Why did the battery go flat in the first place? Check your alternator output and charge rate. Alternator or voltage regulator failure is the most common problems to be aware of. Or the battery could be stuffed! Hope all this helps.

How to change a starter motor on a Nissan 100nx?

Detailed advice step by step needed as it has to be done this week.|||At many auto parts stores you can buy a Haynes do-it-yourself manual for your model car, with step-by-step instructions, and basic explanations at the beginning of each chapter. If it is not in stock, you can order it online by searching on %26quot;auto repair manuals%26quot; on Yahoo search. In the front is a section on %26quot;Troubleshooting%26quot; that guides you step-by-step to find causes of most engine malfunctions based on the car%26#039;s symptoms. Whether you do the work yourself or not, it helps you make informed decisions and not be taken advantage of, and to not feel so %26quot;in the dark.%26quot;

db667089 says: you can check http://www.alldatadiy.com. For about the same price as a Haynes or Chilton%26#039;s repair manual, you can have online access (for a whole year) to model specific info for your particular vehicle. This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

Also, for about $15 for a one-month subscription, you can get the factory manual, downloadable whole or by sections (careful! Mine was about 500 pages!) or viewable, at http://eAutoRepair.com.

What do you do if your starter motor goes on your car, can you simply start it by jump starting the car?

What do you do if your starter motor goes on your car, can you simply start it by jump starting the car, can i change the starter motor myself coz the car doesnt start inorder to get it to the garage, do i need a specific starter motor for a bmw?|||You cannot jump start a car with a bad starter because jump starting still uses the starter and is only any good for a dead battery.

Even if its a manual transmission, do not try to bump start it (push it along then release the clutch), as this may destroy the catalytic converter and those are expensive to replace.

Changing the starter is relatively easy. Disconnect the battery before doing anything. They are usually fixed by 3 or 4 bolts (plus the connections). Take it to you local auto store and trade it for a reconditioned one. The store will give you the correct replacement.|||you most likely will want to consult the dealer simply to see what the exact starter you need and then go to napa and buy the starter, i say napa because they have lifetime warranties on their parts. You can do the job yourself its not the easiest but its definitely something you can do yourself. You can%26#039;t just jump it because that would only help the battery.|||You can%26#039;t jump start a car that has a bad starter. If its a manual shift you may be able to start it by pushing it and then letting out the clutch with the key turned on. You definitely need a starter that is made to fit your car. There is no such thing as a universal one fits all.

j|||Have it towed to the garage. The nature of your questions indicate that you have no business trying to replace a starter motor.

I have the front of my car jacked up and on axle stands but cannot see where the starter motor is. I need to change it as it does not work any more|||If you can%26#039;t identify where the starter is, I suggest you get a Haynes manual.

The starter is between the engine %26amp; the gearbox bellhousing, and will be fed by a heavy red lead straight from the battery. Don%26#039;t touch anything until you%26#039;ve disconnected the battery.|||The starter motor is a round unit about the width of a 2 litre water bottle. It will be sited so the spindle part can connect with the main flywheel - and it is usually secured with 3 bolts.

Especially as its a Volkswagen.. they build their engines close together so that its hard to get to places but its secure...

Don%26#039;t try do it yourself, unless your an experienced mechanic... Its a big job...!

How do you change starter motor in a car?

It%26#039;s a Ford escort. Yes I know that Ford stands for Fix Or Repair Daily. I%26#039;m just wondering.|||You need a good set of sockets, a screwdriver, small open-end wrenches, scissor jack, chocks for the wheels and replacement starter.

Disconnect the battery. Don%26#039;t ever work on any electrical part %26#039;til the battery is disconnected. Jack the engine up by placing the jack under the transmission just behind the flywheel. This will give you just a little bit more room to work in. From the top or bottom, if you prefer, remove the wiring from the starter then with the 3/8 ratchet, unscrew the starter mounting bolts, save them and re-use. Install the replacement in the same position, tighten it down, re-install the wiring, remove the jack, replace the battery connection, start the car. Don%26#039;t forget to save the old starter for a %26quot;core%26quot; return it to the place where you purchased the new one, get your core charge back.|||Undo the bolts and wires and then redo the bolts and wires the way they were...|||Considering you don%26#039;t know how to replace the starter I don%26#039;t think you can say Ford is %26quot;Fix or Repair Daily%26quot;..

How do I change starter motor in my iveco daly?

Starter motor is seriously on its last legs but its gonna cost a fortune for the part let alone labour costs too, can anyone advise how to replace myself?|||Well, to save on the mechanics costs you can buy a manual (for example, the Haynes Manuals are very good, from Halfords), also a large car parts warehouse (like Halfords again!) will be able to type your make and model into the computer to get you the right parts - they even will take the old one back and reduce the cost of the new unit if you do that!! (some Auto Electricians might be able to fix the starter motor if you can afford to have the van off the road for a few days, will cost maybe 拢60)

When I changed starter motor on the car it was held on by 3 bolts and 2 for the wiring, a bit of wiggling it and it came off then the new one was wiggled in place and bolted in again (Haynes Manuals have a spanner system of how hard the job is - this was 2, 1 is things like filling up the windscreen washer tank!)

Good luck with it|||as they make 10 different models and as many as 7 variations of each model its hard to be certain but normaley its dis conect battery two wires on starter three bolts that hold the starter will srew in to the starter through the clutch housing take them out remove starter|||Remove old one and put new one in........see.......easy!

When you took the battery cables loose you might have blown a fuse or relay.|||They wouldn%26#039;t, no relation. a stubbed toe is not responsible or connected to an ear ache.

check all fuses in fuse box or boxes or look in manual to find the location for fuses for these two units, they should be separate.

they could also be interrupted by a bad relay located in the the main fuse box, the manual is no help here. You%26#039;ll need a service from a tech|||When they changed the starter motor they didn%26#039;t disconnect the battery first. They shorted out the starter motor and blew some fuses.Don%26#039;t take it back,don%26#039;t ever go back.Sack that mechanic.Find a new mechanic(a good one).|||The mechanics or personnel who fitted the new starter motor might have disturbed some wiring.
