I removed and refitted my starter motor during a recent clutch change, during the removal it got shorted out then wired up wrong by a friend helping me. since then my battery drains, the engine struggles to start, the ignition lights on the dash dont go out when engine is running and I%26#039;m getting smoke coming from the underside, a lot of smoke, is the the starter or my clutch?|||You need to replace the starter motor before it catches fire|||Not your clutch. You%26#039;ve got a dead short somewhere. Disconnect your battery NOW, before you have a suddenly effective heater! Then check that the earth cables are all connected, if not it%26#039;s trying to feed back through the starter wiring which will not stand it. Hopefully this is all it is, if not it is indeed possible you%26#039;ve fried the solenoid, wiring or even the starter, though I gather it works okay.
And repeat after me, %26quot;I WILL disconnect my battery when fiddling with anything electrical, and keep track of where the wiring goes!%26quot;|||from the sound of it ..its that and a whole lot more|||you need a new starter motor before it sets on fire and u need a new car, the reason is because u have put the starter on wrong in the first place it as burnt out the solunoid in the motor which is putting a feed back to the battery, the easiest way to determine this is if you turn the car over does the power lead from the starter motor to the battery get hot.|||check that the earth wire between the engine and body and the earth wire from the battery to the body are secure|||an auto electriction or fitter is needed to resolve this problem before the vehicle self destructs. or buy a haynes manual to confirm wiring connections the smoke is proberly the insulation on the wiring burning. due to short. lack of charging also indicates incorrect wiring connections.|||duh yes...smoke coming out of it is a sign!|||Before starting the clutch job...the first thing you should have done is disconnect the battery......silly boy..... It wouldn%26#039;t be the clutch.... It could possible be that you haven%26#039;t connected the earth cable from the chassis to the bell housing..........Cant say for sure without looking......sorry.....
