How do i get to the starter motor on my astra diesel 1700cc van (w reg)

i need to change the starter motor on my van but i do not know where it is located.|||The starter motor is located at the back of the engine below the fuel inlet manifold. The best way to get at it is to jack the car up as high as you can, place axel supports under the car.

Remove the exhaust from the manifold, lay on your back under the car and you will be able to get to the starter.

Before you remove the starter do a few checks just to make sure that you are not removing it unnecessarily. First make sure that the connections on the battery are clean and tight, then follow the cables down to the starter. Again check to make sure that the connections between all the cables are tight and clean.

The get yourself a multi meter, connect it to the battery and try turning over the engine. Take a record of the voltage on the battery and if it drops below 8 volts you probably need a new battery.

As your van is a diesel it needs to have a really good condition battery.

Ja.|||Back of the engine at the bottom near the bulkhead. Better accessed from underneath. With respect to John K - he is an experienced mech and considers it a bit tricky. For us normal DIY motorists it is a right sod! (sorry) It will only come out when positioned correctly and there is precious little room to move down there.|||undo battery cables jack up car follow battery cables down the side of motor at end of cable wil be starter.. most every car made they are on the right side of motor... if front wheel drive on the back side of motor... just look at where the battery cable go you will see what im saying... will be between motor and transmission|||Its at the back of the engine, top bolt is usually a 19mm bottom is a 17mm. You DO NOT need to undo the exhaust. If it is the Dti it is a little more awkward but can be removed and refitted in less than an hour.|||Your starter is located at the back of the engine, and comes out from underneath the van.Not the easiest of jobs?It may be necessary to slacken the exhaust front pipe clamp to get a bit more room to work.Hope this helps
